The site
of the aerodrome, including its airfield, has recently been
designated as the Yatesbury Aerodrome Conservation Area.
-
The site
contains 4 important listed buildings; 2 aeroplane storage
hangars and an aeroplane
repair hangar, all dating from 191 6, and the officers' mess
and office building, part of the
civilian flying school opened in 1936. The 3 hangars are all
listed grade 11* and represent
an exceptionally rare survival of a group of First World War
hangars to support a squadron
of aircraft on their original site. The repair hangar has
partially collapsed and all 3 hangars
are in the highest category of risk in English Heritage's
List of Buildings at Risk (Document
20). The officers' mess and office building is listed grade
I1 and is also a rare example of
its type. The other buildings on the site are protected as
cartilage buildings. While the
airfield is now in agricultural use, it is still possible to
see the original setting of the buildings
-
in
relation to the airfield.
